Dancing, teaching, performing – Ballet Spartanburg continues to provide top-quality classes and performances despite the recent economic downturn.
“We have the same strong enrollment in our ballet, tap, jazz, and urban classes, plus adult classes in ballroom, salsa, Middle Eastern, and expanded Irish step classes,” says Executive Director Gene Conroy, who adds that the annual Nutcracker ballet production is generally considered the best in the Upstate.
In line with Ballet Spartanburg’s aim to provide dance education to all segments of the community, programs have been added for folks with Parkinson’s, and for special needs children. “Anyone can benefit from movement education, especially those who are sidelined due to disability,” Gene says. Ballet Spartanburg continues partnerships with Big Brothers, Big Sisters, the Spartanburg Terrace Tenants Association, Weed and Seed, and Boys and Girls Clubs, providing free instruction, dancewear, and shoes to young students.
A partnership with Hub-Bub artists and local musicians has created mixed repertoire programs including modern and avant garde dance. In the past year, dancers from the American Ballet Theatre and the New York City Ballet performed with Ballet Spartanburg.
