Meals on Wheels of Greenville County
Nourishment is about so much more than food.
“When you’re isolated, you hunger for a friendly face,” says Barbara Taggart, one of the 1,350 homebound seniors throughout Greenville County who enjoy a hot, nutritious lunch every weekday from Meals on Wheels.
Barbara enjoys the tasty variety of home-delivered meals—prepared according to her nutritional needs—but even more, she appreciates the daily visit from a volunteer she’s grown to know and love. Because along with lunch comes a sense of security, the reassurance that someone is stopping by each day and can, if needed, initiate arrangements for other community-based services.
“It’s just been wonderful,” Barbara says.
Founded in 1968, Meals on Wheels operates with 2,500 dedicated volunteers, including 110 corporate program members, who do everything from answering phones to prepping food to driving one of the 117 delivery routes. Some volunteer every day, others weekly or monthly, as their schedule allows.
Meals on Wheels is supported exclusively through corporate and private donations, and raises funds through annual signature events such as the Sweetheart Charity Ball, Wheels for Meals, Par Tee and MOW Fall Classic.
Generous donors, even during tough times, allow Meals on Wheels to provide services to all clients completely free of charge.
