Tony Vander Wood has plenty to celebrate. His trio of package stores turns 21 this spring—and that is, of course, an appropriately auspicious age in the liquor industry. The Greenville native popped the top on Tony’s Liquor Stores on April Fools Day in 1990, and he’s been pouring himself into the business of raising spirits ever since.
Along with individual sales at three hopping locations—Augusta Road, Stallings Road and East North Street—Tony’s enjoys supercall status as the largest restaurant and bar supplier in the Upstate. Buzz is this homegrown success comes from a mix of friendly, knowledgeable service and extremely competitive prices.
Toasting the past 21 years, Tony reflects on the ever-evolving liquor industry. Where once vodka came in one flavor—vodka—there are now upwards of 25 varieties, including bacon and tomato. And he carries them all.
“Just waiting for lettuce-flavored vodka so we can drink a BLT,” laughs Tony, a graduate of Wade Hampton High and the University of South Carolina.
Other happy innovations lining his shelves include alcohol-infused whipped cream.
“I try every new item that comes out,” Tony says, so customers are guaranteed up-to-the-moment variety. “People’s tastes change, and sometimes they just want something different.”
